what is the crocs
On a boat trip to the Caribbean, Scott Simans bragged to his buddies about rubber waterproof galoshes that did not slip or leave marks on the deck.

Simans's friends, Lyndon Hanson and George Boedeker Jr. liked the galoshes. Together they envisioned starting their own rubber slipper business.

Before the crocs, there were espadrilles -sailcloth slippers whose rope soles wore out over time. Then topsiders with light-colored soles appeared, but they did not last long and got wet quickly.
Yachtsmen have come up with lightweight, waterproof shoes with good traction, important for sailing, midway between sandals and galoshes
Scott Seamans
They were shaped like sabots with holes in the top and sides. The holes were used to ventilate the feet and keep out excess moisture. They also do not leave marks on the boat's trim or streak on the deck planks.

The company’s crisis was influenced not only by the global recession, but also by a drop in interest in the product itself. A customer bought a pair and did not come back for a new one for a long time, as the demand for crocs was restrained by their durability. Also, orders from retailers decreased, there was an oversupply in their own stores, and counterfeits flooded the market.
The company was making losses, and it became obvious that something had to change: attract investment and expand the range. Even if Crocs were suitable for yachtsmen and small children, this was still not the entire potential audience for polymer shoes, and the company had to increase its reach in order to survive.

Why crocs became
and remain popular
The sabots were originally conceived as simple, comfortable and non-slip shoes for walking on the wet surface of boats. As a result, Crocs have become a cult brand and a unique footwear brand that is known throughout the world.

The fashionable public’s passion for rubber slippers is easy to explain — comfort comes first. People no longer want to compromise and wear uncomfortable things for the sake of appearance. You want to look less serious, because there is enough seriousness in the world as it is.

Orthopedic rubber slippers, resembling a cheerful children’s constructor, are the perfect combination of these qualities: in  they are equally comfortable to pop out for groceries in the nearest supermarket and go to a party, because they will look equally ridiculous in  any combination.

«We are living in a period of political and cultural change, so young people want to wear shoes that don't have a gender history.»
